Brief History
|
|
|
The department was originally the Institute of Information Engineering that began in the fall of 1987 as the first high educational institute offering graduate programs and
professional training in computer science and engineering in southern Taiwan. In the fall of 1997, the institute
provided undergraduate programs an expansion of the current educational
programs and become the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering.
The curriculum and research areas provided for graduate study and undergraduate study include computer
architecture, artificial intelligence, computer graphics, image processing, speech recognition, computer security, multimedia computing, databases, operating systems, parallel processing, and performance
evaluation, covering a wide spectrum of computer field.
Presently, in this department, there are nearly eighty graduate students doing individual researches in eight laboratories respectively to

Teaching Objectives
|
|
|
The objective of developing this department is to pursue and develop the newest technologies in information engineering, to raise up the nation competition power, to cultivate
students for research careers, and to train professionals for information industry. As the school has evolved toward a complete university, techniques of information engineering are in high demand in
many related educational fields, such as : flight information management, medical care, library information retrieval, geographic information system, .. etc.. Consequently, the Department of Computer
Science and Information engineering play very important roles in providing educational courses, research training, necessary consulting and services to support the other related institutes in the
university.

The institute will provide better opportunities for high-level education in computer science and information technology. The educational and research programs will be further
improved to support the increasing needs of engineers and scientists in computer related fields to the industry and the science park in Tainan area. The future development of the institute is listed as
follows:
- More classes will be open to educate and train even better professionals in the field of information industry and to raise up the institute academic reputation.
- In order to make better collaboration between research and education, the institute will cooperate more with other departments, institutes and develop international
exchange and cooperation program.
- The institute will expand programs in information application, such as the national geographic information system, information network design, PACS, etc..
- The institute will initiate its undergraduate program in Fall 1997. This will further elevate the quality and quantity of information education in NCKU.
